Is There a Problem with Free MSE?

Does the following just happen to me or does free MSE have a problem.

When testing free MSE I've found that if its updating & the update stops (say from lost of internet) the program locks up, when you try & update again, it won't, not until you've done a scan will allow you to update.

更新:

MSE = Microsoft Security Essentials

更新 2:

@soupfine - i will try that next time it locks up

更新 3:

@smgray99 - i agree with the first part of your answer, however Nod32, Avast, Avira & the many others I've tested don't lock up when this happens, they work alright & update upon getting internet back, but MSE locks up, therefore if my AV is lock up, then its the same as running with no AV, how many people are running without knowing MSE has lock up !

更新 4:

@Wide Glide

Vista

Security:

Free MSE

Free Malwarebytes

Free Superantispyware (disabled from start up)

Free WOT.

更新 5:

Windows Defender is "Disabled"

更新 6:

well, well, well, is microsoft read my question, MSE now gives a pop up when internet is lost, which stops the locking, it was not doing that before.......

    Same as soupfine here Sly, never seen that happen, been using MSE since the beta was released. I have had the update fail from within the program itself, but updating through Windows Update, solved it.

    Question ???

    Windows XP/Vista/Win 7

    What other security software are you using(In case there is a conflict)

    When using windows XP and MSE there is a known issue when using Mbam, but simple file exclusions to add to MSE and Mbam to correct this. Some issues in Vista/7, but all corrected by adding exclusions

    MSE AND Mbam Exclusions

    http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic...

    EDIT: If adding the exclusions does not work, then Houston we have a problem, :(

    I have the same set-up on test pc, will try to replicate

    EDIT: Make sure that Windows Defender is "Disabled" in services, MSE replaces it and is supposed to turn it off(I have seen where it does NOT turn off)

    Any chance of a prior antivirus leftover's

    MSE also uses "Cloud" technology, Wonder if yours has gotten confused somehow. Check your setting in Microsoft Spynet(Mine is set to basic, always sending file samples)

    MSE is a decent anti-virus program with some anti-spyware built in (despite it coming from Microsoft for all the Microsoft haters out there) and is on par and possibly better than most of the other free anti-virus programs. That being said, any program that is getting an update from the internet and it fails due to loss of a connection will not work properly. You are lucky that it only requires a scan to fix it, many programs will lock the system up entirely.

    I have never had that problem and have never had the program lock up for any reason even with loss of internet connection.

    Just a note...you can also update MSE by opening Windows Update. The virus definition file will be in the list of optional updates. You can manually update MSE also if you are having problems with Windows Update or MSE's self-update:

    and thanks for all your good answers.

    You might want to explain what this MSE is you are referring to. Don't assume everyone knows what the acronyms you use stand for.

    Do you really expect it to work properly ?

    it's just windows defender with a few bits and bells added on.
