I think Gmail is the Safest, I haven't had any problems with it and I have been using it right from its Inception in 2004.

also I wouldn't trust gmail I mean after all it is ran by google, and if anyone has ever done any research about google they store all YOUR searches from YOUR IP address. supposedly to help make searches faster, but I believe that they can, and will share your information with third party companies, such as name, ip address, your general discussions with people you talk to through mail, Just like FACEBOOK does, go read the facebooks privacy policy and TOS. you'll find it rather intriguing.
