Why does the temperature light come on when braking?
Hey guys, I'm an amateur do-it-yourselfer so please help if you can. I have a 1996 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham. When I apply the brakes, the temperature light comes on but disappears the moment I release the brake. It only happens on drive, not park. I tried changing the temperature sensor on the water pump and the thermostat with no results. I think it is an electrical problem because I can drive on the highway for miles and miles and the light wont come on, only when braking or stopped at a stop light but the light goes away when I put it in park. No over boiling, good coolant level, good water pump, fans are working. Has anyone ever seen this before?

Electrical problem yes.For some reason, the brake lamp circuit is grounding out to the temp warning lamp circuit.Electricity will always take the easiest path to ground.A broken wire,or even a bad bulb socket grounding at the right place will cause that temp light to come on.Check all brake lamp bulb sockets, stop lamp switch circuit and all related wiring for any shorts to ground thru the temp lamp circuit.

Are you sure it is the engine temp light? I can see this happening with the coolant reservoir level light. Because the coolant being low enough in the reservoir would slosh forward during braking allowing the float sensor to tell you it was low.
If it is not that, I can only think of it being an electrical issue. Which will be extremely hard for a mechanic to diagnose over the internet. You will need to have a mechanic look at it and diagnose the issue.
