I have a bullet in me...Will I be OK?

Forty years some years ago I was shot with an "Unloaded gun" from only about 16" away.

The bullet a 22 long rifle went into my leg and hit the bone, stopping it and it and the bone were "Pulverized".

They told me they would have to cut me up like hamburger to get it all out and that someday the hundreds of pieces might come out on their own. They didn't.

At the time they didn't know lead was so bad for you... now they do.

I'm under the assumption that it is only bad if it gets in your blood stream. Is this true?

Is their anything I can do other than have the pieces removed the will increase my chances of a longer life with little or no lead problems?

I've still got 4 rounds in me from a Degtyaryov machine gun. One's near the spinal cord so it causes pain quite frequently, but the others aren't an issue. Don't worry about the lead too much.
