Going to London. What should I see in 1 week?
I'll be in London for a week or ten days in the middle of October. I'm interested in art and history. Any good ideas what to see? I don't want to take a tour but go to obscure places by myself. I want to have a lot of pictures so I can paint when I get home. Also going to Paris on the weekends.

Kenwood House, Hampstead Heath (Underground Northern Line to Archway or Golders Green then 210 bus). Ham House, Ham, Surrey (closed on Thursdays). Underground, London Overground or train from Waterloo to Richmond then 371 bus. The area of Southall in west London - the cultural and commercial home of London's Asian population - an animated and interesting place. Suburban train from Paddington Station to Southall.
Best way to Paris is by train from St Pancras International to Paris Gare du Nord - you'll some of south east England on the way. Advance purchase return tickets from £59. www.eurostar.com They do train/hotel packages too

Apart from the obvious (art galleries and museums) here are a few more suggestions (more for your interest in art depending on what you like to photograph and paint):
- Waterloo Underpass (Lambeth side): Famous for it's graffiti artwork
- Notting Hill Market (Portobello Road)
- Greenwich
- Putney (there is a track running from Putney to Barnes hidden away that follows the River Thames that is rarely used except by runners and cyclists)
- Docklands
- Little Venice canals (Warwick Avenue)
Some are busier than others, but all have their own charm.

I wrote an article about seeing some of the main sites in central London, quickly. However you have more time, so you can take your time. Though you will pass many of the main spots, its the fact that you walk through several parks while doing this that is helpful. Random houses, couples on walks, ducks on ponds surrounded by decent foliage should create great paintings.
