Can I lie about having a masters degree and still be hired?

The job I'm after requires a masters degree in behavioral science and I don't have one. I have a bachelors, but that's it. Besides this minor and insignificant detail about having a masters degree - I'm perfect for this job!!!!....so can I fudge it and still be hired?

You could lie and possibly get hired. But that would be like a lie hanging over your head and they could find out. If not before, than after your hired. But even if you got away with it for a while, you would be establishing a reputation for not being truthful and if you did it once, you'll do it again (or with something else). A life filled with dishonesty and lack of integrity is not a good way to live your life (even for financial gain).

Is it possible? Yes. But it's highly unlikely that in the current climate they won't check and if they find out you're lying you won't be hired or, if you already have been hired you will be fired. Unless there is a legal requirement for the degree (rather than simply the employer's policy) you would have a better chance (though probably still not a very good one) of convincing them of how "perfect" you are for the job.

Yep. And when they find out you lied, you can be charged with fraud, fired, and even arrested in some states. If you need a masters to get the job, you are not perfect for the job without a masters. And many employers are now checking up on degrees people claim to have thanks to the large number of people lying about their education or claiming a diploma mill degree as a real one.

If any background check is required and performed, you would be found out. Most job applications these days have the statement right at the end of the application that you sign that you agree that lying or omitting information knowingly on your application is grounds for termination. If it is a government job, you may have perjury issues to deal with if you lie on your resume. It's really not worth it.

My current job checked to make sure I really did have a bachelor's degree, so lying won't do you any good. They'll find out.

You would have to PROVE that you had the master's.

And it's definitly not minor and insignificant. Find another job or go get your masters.
