What is the best place to donate books to ?

Of course, I give many books to my local libraries for their book sales, and I also donate to Goodwill, but I would really like to find a free way to get my books into the hands of people who can truly not afford them rather than people with money who are just looking for a good deal.

    How about an elderly housing unit. A lot of older folks live on a fixed income, and would love to have some free reading material. If they are disabled, they can't get to the library or thrift stores on a whim.

    Maybe one of those buildings has an on-site reading room in the common areas.

    Btw, Salvation Army just raised their prices on books. It used to be 1.00 for softcover and 2.00 for hardcover. They've changed it to 80% off retail cover price. So, the bargains aren't there like they used to be.

    Add: If your town has a Christian mission, ( my town does ) they sell their stuff at rock bottom or give the stuff away to clients that are in several of the programs such as bible study and life skill classes. The clients earn items by building points, no cash needed.

    Hope this helped, and I applaud your actions, you have a good heart.

    try hospitals or nursing homes or rehab houses ,veterans hospitals senior citizens housing, the projects, I wanted to start a book swap at work.......... maybe at church too. My plan was to set up a small library in my garage where coworkers could bring in a book and trade for another......... then the tornado hit the house and my garage has been used for construction materials. I may still get it off the ground this spring!!

    Giving books to Goodwill is the best way to get anything

    to people who can't afford them. That's their "mission";

    they'll take anything you're willing (no pun intended) to

    give them--with the one & only exception of perishables;

    meaning, of course, food items.

    There's one other way to get books to people who can't

    afford them: sponsor a child--in a place such as, for ex-

    ample, South Eastern Kentucky; it'll cost you between $30

    and $50 per month. And you'll be able to send your sponsor

    child's family any sort of gift you'd like to. (Especially books

    would be greatly appreciated!)

    Try the Salvation Army, or a school library. I am pretty sure you can somehow donate them to children in the foster care but it depends by area. I would say Salvation Army. Thanks for being active in helping the needy.

    Another place is your local hospital. These people may or may not be able to afford them, but they often have to wait for long periods and forget to take something to read.

    The barnes and noble near my home is collecting books for a children's orphanage. I would go and check that out.
