Are stores in California generally open on 1 January?

Are department stores like WalMart and Kohls open for business in Northern California on New Years Day - 1 January - or are they closed for the holiday?

    Unfortunatly they remain open on all holidays except Christmas.

    I have never lived in cali but I have lived all over, and generally some small self owned businesses like pub or restaurants MIGHT be closed but big stores NO. SOME big ones might be closed but the same Company will keep another opened... but there is alot opened. Banks are the only places that are for sure closed on jan 1st!
