Do you think 'First Contact' will result in mass hysteria and tumbling of religions?

or will religions explain the existence of EBEs the same way they did when native americans were discovered.

I really don't know why everybody thinks that if UFOs landed on Earth, religions should be shattered by their presence. Why should that happen? Religion, I am a Christian, does not expressis verbis exclude the possibility of extraterrestrial life. What on earth is there so strange about a possible UFO contact with humanity? I really cannot understand this. I think it is because of the deteriorated view of religion in most people's minds who think religious faith is a backward and limited way of thinking and that the wiser a man is and more experienced the less he is religious. However, quite the opposite is true.

There is a very interesting book about how Religious figures such as Angels and Demons have been replaced by UFOs and Aliens as part of a social and cultural phenomenon.

Essentially, Religious institutions explaining the existence of aliens might be like Scientific institutions explaining the existence of the Supernatural.

I don't think Religion would be the major concern. "Mass hysteria" seems like a good word, but I think it'd be more along the lines of "Mass Paranoia".

People would create radical groups, essentially because the existence of other species that "match our intelligence" would not make us question our insignificance in the universe; rather, we will defend our anthrocentric views, even if it means violence.

In theory it sounds OK but many don't want saving nor others preaching to them how they should live, even though ironically they lead religiously guided lives that they are completely misled by. Many seem to seek and need help desperately, because they lack confidence in their own ability to work it out for themselves and often fall victim to their own circumstance, which they find themselves powerless to change. Whilst they wait for miracles or chances they would very rarely get the opportunity to have in this random chaotic mad life but nether the less endeavour to keep some sort of faith. Late edit~ the saddest story is the poor being stripped of their money for the cause. God a device for control

Yes on mass hysteria (a slew of movies could be used as references).

For religion? It isn't all bad as most people assume

I think that if any community were to get hysterical about such a thing, it would be the scientific community. Religion would simply find a way to absorb it. It isn't nearly as sure of itself as science.

    Dear EFW

here's a tip. Most the world's greatest scientists were deeply religious such as Einstein, Darwin etc. Scientist now that our universe is expanding which means that there was a begining.
