First feminist book?
What was the first 'feminist' book you read and how did it impact on you?
Ellesar ~ sorry about that, I wish the question itself could be edited!
No, I'm really looking to hear about the first 'feminist' book people read, what they liked (or didn't) about it ... that type of thing :-)
Thanks!
Haven't done this before so I'm not sure if it works, but I decided to extend the question time to see if anyone else has an answer they'd like to give.
Thank you all for your great answers so far :-)

In high school, when I was away at camp, I read Our Bodies, Our Selves, and found out the specifics of what sex was, what birth control was, more about what lesbians were, what abortion was, specifics about pregnancy, and learned a heck of a lot about sex. If I hadn't read that book, I don't know when I would have learned exactly what it took to get pregnant. I had practically no information about it from school or my parents. I didn't even know birth control existed. Ah, but ignorance is supposed to be bliss, right?

At first I thought you meant what is thought to be the first feminist book, and I know that, but the first book I read that was in any way feminist was Fay Weldon's 'The Fat womans Joke' - she couldn't be described as a feminist, but there are definitely a number of feminist themes in the book.
I was a bit young for it to impact upon me because it was all a bit adult and wierd, but I did enjoy it, and have read it several times since.
I was 9 (I had quite an advanced reading age!).

Hi Thing! Hard to remember a 'first', but an early influence on me was the Journals of Anais Nin, in which she explored female experience very frankly. She had a relationship with that most macho of writers, Henry Miller, and set up a marvellous contrast between how he wrote and how she wrote.

Gloria Steinem, Moving Beyond Words.
I found it at a used bookstore and picked it up for the heck of it.
I think the parts that stuck with me the most was the piece on Bev, the strongest woman in the world, and the introspective piece exploring how issues that affect women in one socio-economic class can vary wildly from those that affect women in another.

That was The Feminine Mystique. It opened my eyes to what other women had gone through and were currently going through, but it didn't have a good deal of impact on me personally.
