UK internet users, how does government filtering of 'offensive' web sites affect you?

The Australian Government is planning to filter or block 'objectionable' internet sites, such as porn, from Australian homes and schools.

They are going to do this using software at the ISP end of it (see link to news item: http://www.smh.com.au/news/web/labor-war...

They claim this is already done in the UK and European countries, including the Scandinavian countries, and that people are fine with it.

My question ~ is this true? Is there filtering of sites in the UK and in countries in Europe, and IF SO, how does it affect you?

Does it make the internet slow? Are kids still able to get around the filters? Do people have to phone their service providers and ask for the restrictions to be lifted?

As an Australian concerned about interference in internet accessibility, ANY info you can provide would be appreciated!

    I can't say I've ever come accross a site blocked by a britain wide firewall.

    It does not affect me because the only things that are filtered are illegal and vile things which no normal human would want to view. The biggest UK ISP has a system called cleanfeed which filters out only illegal material - child pornography and extreme pornography which depicts real cases of rape, strangulation, necrophilia and torture.

    There is absolutely no filtering in the UK of normal legal porn (even the most hardcore stuff), and that's how it should be. I go on porn all the time and have never had to call my ISP and ask them if they will let me view it...

    If your government is planning on filtering out regular porn then your country has serious problems.

    Don't sound right....Censer-ship is not freedom to choose, how many choices should any country have mold you . What next pick your uniform too.
