router - internet connection ok with ie, but not firefox/msn/avg/skpe?

i've bought a brand new laptop and a wireless router, loaded with vista. i'm connecting the cable modem to my router, and router to my desktop(by cable) and to my laptop(wireless) basically everything looks fine; all indications show i have proper internet connection. i'm getting perfect connection on my desktop, all programs are fine.

the problem is with my laptop; the ONLY program able to connect to internet is IE7; it works normally, i can receive/send email, surf, download/upload. none of the other programs work. firefox would display a blank page. msn/skype can not register my accounts. AVG antivirus does not update. i have to re-install firefox before i open it, in order for it to work.

i've allowed firefox/msn/skype..etc thru firewall, or even tried turning off firewall. nothing works, please help me!!!

更新:

thanx WG for the idea, i did just what you said but it still doesn't work

Are you sure that your Firefox isn't set to use a proxy server that it cannot reach? Check Tools/Options/Advanced/Network and click on the Settings button. If you have a proxy server there, remove it and try to see if it works after removing it...

    Edit #1:

Did you disable the firewall on both the wireless router and on the laptop? This is a very curious problem. To me, it seems that there's a misconfiguration, but I cannot narrow it down based on the information provided.

There are the obvious things to check: IP Address, subnet mask, local firewall/wireless firewall, Name Server Address. Then you have the questions of: Can you ping the wireless segment? Can you ping anything outside your network (Internet)? Does the laptop and desktop use the same router to get to the Internet? Can you ping the desktop from the laptop? Ooh, what happens when you place the laptop on the wired segment? --> this might tell you a lot more than trying to resolve it via the wireless connection. Maybe something is wrong with the network stack on your laptop...

I wish I could help you more and I'd love to know what resolves the problem. This is a very bizarre problem that I've never seen, so I'd like to add the knowledge to my tool belt of things to try/check.

    Thanks,

    WG
