Would a Canon S3 be worth buying now?
Since the camera is older? I was thinking of either getting a Panasonic TZ3, a Canon 850, or the S3. I care about image quality compared to cost, I am on a budget of <350$.
I'd like to be able to just wander around the forest or whatever and take pictures. I am not really the type to just pull out a camera with my friends around and start clicking away, so size isn't too much of an issue really, but it does have it's benefits of me being more likely to take it along.

It's still a potent camera providing you know what to do (have experience in photography). Since it's an advanced point and shoot and is designed to be an SLR-like camera, I think this camera would be a good one if you want to have a camera that is not as big and not as expensive as a DSLR, while retaining most of its capability.
Of course, sensor size would be a problem when you're in a low light condition and shutter lag does exist although not as bad as the entry level point and shoot but if you learn all the pluses and the minuses of this camera you can still shoot good pictures with it.

If you wan't a DSLR-like camera, short on budget and hates heavy lenses of long range lens of a DSLR, then yes it is worth buying. But don't expect too much on the higher end of the zoom range as this is a weakness of all long zooms.
