It's a great museum, but are you going to travel there and back in one day? Better to stay in York for a couple of days. It's a beautiful city, with a lot to see.
I have a particular interest in transport museums because I taught History for years, mainly the syllabus on Social and Economic History of UK from 1850-1950.
But, as one of your other respondents said, you could go to the museum at Covent Garden (Transport Museum), it is also very good.

It is ABSOLUTELY worth a visit. It is the best "railway" museum in Europe and probably in the world. Seriously, it is fantastic. I should know, before one had to pay, I used to have an annual membership to it. It has two massive halls with trains of all ages and from various countries and they recently opened up the workshops so you can see them working on the engines. They have a website, don't know what it is like but have a look. The restaurant is good but you can take a picnic. At weekends they run either a steam train or other locomotive (only a short track) and these are great fun. If you have kids (or in my case even if you don't) they have a minature steam track too. There is masses to see and they also have a lot of train and station memorobilia. You will not be disappointed - get that train booked from London to York and if you are clever and book it on line you should be able to get a really cheap deal for around £22 return. Look on trainline. Also, don't forget York has masses of other wonderful things to do too. Yorvik Museum, Minster, river trips, 2 theatres etc. I sound like I should work for the tourist board!

A lot depends on the ages of your kids. The trip from Kings Cross is an adventure in itself. The museum is a short walk from York station and great fun for kids of all ages. Obviously, if yours don't like trains, they won't enjoy the journey or the museum.
A tip. If you book the train 12 weeks in advance, it's about 1/3 of the "travel today" fare. I suggest you plan your visit for the Christmas break (but check the museum opening times).
