Solomon Linda from what is now Swaziland, wrote,"Mbube." Loosely translated from Zulu "Mbube" means "lion." Linda wrote the song following a real life incident of lions stalking cattle into villages hungry for a meal. Solomon's song was meant to calm the fears and terrors of the children. An evocative refrain... a lion, far away in the jungle, far away from the children and their cattle...the lion, just contentedly sleeping.
Since 1939 there have been numerous versions of the song and almost as many fights in court over copyright and/or ownership. Finally, after decades, Solomon Linda's family won the court battles. Copyright laws will enable Linda's heirs to profit from the "The Lion Sleeps tonight."

I can't remember all the words to this song but it was out when I was a baby. It has been redone a couple of times since the sixties, that is its original era. If you listen to the original, they harmonized on it. But I have no clue at to why this or certain other songs were written.
