  • What sites are similar to Yahoo! Answers?

Many of the recent changes to Y! A have made the site less enjoyable for me. Still, I do like sharing my knowledge (especially taxes) with others. I'm about to jump ship from Yahoo! Answers (and Yahoo! in general), but would like to find someplace else to go. Any suggestions?

  • What do I need to know when my father is transfering his home deed to me?

My father is transferring the deed of his home to me. (Yes, he has spoken with appropriate financial advisors to make sure this is the right move). The house is worth about $100K. It will be my second home. He will live in it rent-free.

I know he will need to file a gift-tax return. I know I will need to know both his adjusted basis and the FMV at time of transfer for when I later sell the house.

Are there any other tax matters I should know about?

  • Traditional IRA rolled over into 529 -- early withdrawal penalty?

A family member took a withdrawal from a Traditional IRA and then rolled that amount over into a 529 plan. I know they will have to pay income tax on the distribution and fear they will have to also pay the 10% penalty for an early distribution. Am I correct about the penalty, or am I missing something in my research? If your answer is that they don't have to pay the penalty, directing me to the correct Pub. would be greatly appreciated.

  • Tro, please read this "question"?

Tro, I doubt this will do any good, but I feel a moral obligation to try. You regularly answer tax questions stating that if a married-but-separated couple hasn't spent a single 'nite' together during the last six months of the year, they can file as single. For federal income tax purposes, this is simply not the case. In some very specific circumstances one might be able to file as head of household, but unless there is a legal separation with a decree of separate maintenance neither person in the couple can file as single. Without the separate maintenance decree, the ONLY possible filing statuses are MFJ, MFS, or HOH. Filing as single simply is not an option. Please review Pub. 17, chapter 2. The sub-section on filing as single is only three short paragraphs.

    There, I tried.
