The Portuguese were looking to establish trade routes to China for silk and spices, but Islamic expansionist armies established forts along the west coast of Africa, along the Red Sea, and throughout the Mideast, specifically to stop them. When the Europeans decided to try to trade with the Muslims instead, all they had to offer were human slaves, who were of so little value that they had to be bought and sold in large numbers to be profitable. Christian Europe had no slavery at all up until that point.

His father commented that he saw 2 men kissing in Orlando months ago, and that was probably the trigger. I guess he just couldn't get it out of his mind. He was the poster boy for our multicultural society, but couldn't reconcile his own latent homosexuality with his Islamic beliefs and community. Maybe some things just don't go well together. Garlic and candy canes. Milk and tequila. Islam and freedom.
