After reading a few laymen's introduction type books, I'm interested in reading more. However the books I have read have pointed me towards Freud's original works. I'm worried that the translations might be too dense, and it will also miss out on any criticisms or refinements of Freud's works.

Also, is there any empirical evidence as to the efficacy of Freudian or Lacanian psychoanalysis as opposed to other forms of therapy?
