  • In Tombstone, it's said the Sun rises over Rockies and below is CA. Where can this happen?

"You ever see the Sun come up over the Rockies? It hits all of a sudden, and below there's California. And you swear you're lookin' at Heaven."

I'm wondering if there is a place in Arizona where you can watch the Sun rise over the Rockies, then turn around and look down on California.

  • First scene of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. "They've started to sing, sire." "Finally". Why?

It seems to me that Lord Becket intentionally stirred the spirits of the common people, so they would sing; once they started singing, the coin started to sing when the boy died. Later in the movie, Barbosa throws a coin to Fen Sheo (sp) and says, "The song has been sung, so we all have to gather." Is this the same coin? Is he referring to the people singing, and the related ringing of the coin?

I don't fully understand this. In effect, it was Lord Cutler Beckett that set the wheels in motion to get the Pirates to gather, and to have Jack freed? Can anyone explain the details of the scheme to me? And the purpose? And how they relate to the schemes of Jack and the others? It seems that Lord Beckett is actually the person who set a plan in motion, and followed it through. All the way to the end, when Will ended up as Captain and chose to stand with "the people". (through Jack's unselfish choice, more than anything, though several of their plans and choices led to that moment.)

Was Lord Beckett in effect trying to pick a fight so he could wipe them out once and for all? Get them in one place? And, who is the boy?

  • Does anyone feel that Sam Kinison's death was a judgement from God?

Sam Kinison was a preacher who decided to turn from religion and become a comedian. Some of his comedy was about religion. For instance, in one part he asks why none of the 5000 people so much as brought a sandwhich when they asked Jesus to divide the bread and wine. He also made comments about Jesus not being married, and he even made jokes about God saying to Sam, "Oh, you think that's funny? How do you like the sound of this?" after which, the "heartbeat" that Sam was thumping on the microphone--representing his own--stopped. He also made not so politically correct comments about drunk driving.

He was killed by a drunk driver. Some friends are telling me that this was a judgement from God. Does God really make this sort of individual judgement and pass a death sentence? How can I prove or disprove the comments of my friends, who don't bother to provide reasonable logic for their belief?

  • There are many examples of successful people of all races, so why judge individuals based on race?

I asked this of one person, and decided because this is called "Yahoo! Answers", I should ask everyone.

I know a lot of people on here claiming to be racist are doing it to get people riled up. But I also know that there are many racists out there.

  • If the odds are that many of your descendants will go to Hell, should a responsible Christian not reproduce?

    QUESTION FOR CHRISTIANS ONLY:

California Frown asked a question that I thought was great, but no one really answered it. Maybe they misunderstood. I'm asking again hoping that Christians will truly think about this, and give a thoughtful answer.

The question isn't about the existence of God. It is saying that the odds are very good that some of your children or grandchildren will go to Hell. They will, through free will, choose to be an Atheist, or perhaps they will choose to follow another religion. This is supported by my own experience in life. All Christian families have some who turn away from the religion that they were born into. At least on the extended family level.

If, as a Christian, you do agree that some of your descendants will go to Hell, isn't the only responsible decision to not have descendants? After all, if even one of your descendants goes to Hell, then you made it possible for that soul to be damned to Hell. If you hadn't had children...

  • What is Nod?

In response to a question about Adam and Eve, someone responded that Adam and Eve were the first in the garden, but there were people from Nod, which is why Cain had to have a mark on him to protect him from other men.

I would like to know more about Nod.

  • Why did Jesus wait until the age of 30 do get himself baptized?

There were examples of baptism before then. And, at the age of 12 or 13 he was in temples explaining Jewish religion to the preachers of his time. Why wait until 30, and what was he doing until the time that he chose to start his ministry?

  • Where was Jesus from the age of 13 to the age of 30?

I have always wondered this. I realize there are ancient books not accepted into the Bible that say. But most people wouldn't accept that as fact.

Any ideas? Any facts? Any unsupported thoughts on the matter?

  • Why does the U.S. use the solstices and equinoxes to mark the beginning of seasons?

I'm a U.S. citizen, and this is something that puzzles me at least twice a year. The solstices are usually mentioned on the radio, on the news on television and in newspapers. The media--and our citizens--are always saying that June 21, for instance, is the beginning of summer. By my logic, it's the middle of summer, and the beginning came 1 1/2 months before. On what some call the cross-quarter days.

Apparently, most of the world does consider solstices and equinoxes as the middle of seasons. Hence Shakespeare's play, "A Midsummer Night's Dream". Which would then refer to the Summer Solstice, probably on June 21 or June 22, by our calendar.

  • Why is it that people resort to calling someone unpatriotic or worse when they don't have a good answer?

A good question was asked today:

How can Bush claim that he is keeping America safe?

It could have been a catalyst for good discussion. Instead, several people claim that the asker is either unpatriotic in some way or supporting terrorism.

Do these type of people truly feel that all Americans must blindly support every President's decision to have our youth die in wars? When do they feel it is acceptable to question and discuss the reasons for risking the lives of our own youth to take the lives of other people?

In my opinion, it is always acceptable to openly discuss such things. If our President is doing right, then an open discussion shouldn't hurt a thing. It certainly isn't unpatriotic. And it in no way supports terrorism--or whatever the case may be.

  • Why do some people think it's reasonable to do away with warrants and allow the government to spy anywhere?

Before Bush, the government could already spy on any citizen, get any phone records, etc.. But, they needed to document their reasons for doing so. They needed to record the reasons that they were invading privacy for a specific person or group of people.

Why support Bush's decision to ignore that law? Why remove that accountability?

  • To all, if your children were to decide to follow a belief system that isn't your own, what would you do?

This applies to all. If you don't have children, imagine that you do. If you're an Athiest, imagine that your children choose to follow some religion. If you're a Christian, imagine that they decide that they are truly and Athiest or Muslim or Morman. Same for all other religions.

  • Do people really understand why we have 7 days in a week?

Jack P. asked a question that I thought was funny. I like you already! :)

But, many people answering truly seem to wonder if there is any other reason to have 7 days in a week. There is. Look at phases of the Moon, for a major clue. Whoever can answer and clearly explain the reason for 7 days in a week, you'll get 10 points for best answer.

  • Does anyone see a parallel between Evolution's current status and the status of a heliocentric solar system?

The Vatican, as one world wide voice for religion, finally admitted in 1992 that they should have listened to Galileo in the 1600's. Now, in 2007, most citizens believe that Earth is not center of the Universe. In the 2005 article below, which discusses the 1992 declaration on heliocentricism, evolution is also mentioned. In July 2007, the Vatican again came out stating that there is proof of evolution.

I know that the Vatican doesn't speak for all. Definitely not. Especially for Protestants! But, the Vatican was hard headed enough to wait until 1992 to admit that Earth wasn't the center of the Universe. (We sent satellites up in the 1950's, and men walked on the Moon in the 1960's!) The fact that they've come around gives me hope that--like Earthcentric supporters--those denying evolution will eventually be such a small percentage of the population as to be considered more extreme than extremists. Your opinion?

  • For those supporting Creationism/Intelligent Design in schools, would you agree if all religions were taught?

If you won, and Intelligent Design were taught in schools, what would you do if Islam and other religions were taught?

Islam, from what I've heard, is the fastest growing religion right now. So, if you win your court battles, it's likely that Islam will gain more followers than Christianity. In that case, would you still support the teaching of Intelligent Design in classrooms?

(I'm wondering if you really want to teach Creationism, or if you're wanting to get Christianity in the door. Because judging from current statistics, Christianity would lose out to Islam...)

  • Should all people, upon reaching adulthood, re-consider the beliefs that they were taught as children?

Do you think each adult should question their beliefs, or should they accept what was passed on to them by their family and community?

I asked a related question (about whether each of you has re-evaluated your own beliefs), which made me wonder if this is something that each adult should do. I think it's safe to say that most people continue to believe whatever it is they were raised with. Is this the best way to get our own belief systems? Or is this possibly one reason that there have been so many wars throughout human history? If each person re-evaluated their belief system, it seems that eventually, most people would come to believe a common truth. Because if there is a Truth, then it would eventually come to light for all or most people as they seek the Truth. Maybe some would argue that this is what religions are doing. But if so, then why doesn't the world as a whole come closer and closer to knowing the Truth?

Is each person responsible for their own beliefs?

  • Have you re-considered the beliefs you were raised with, or do you accept them without questioning?

I ask this because I read an answer in which someone said that people are Athiests because of how they were raised, and by that logic, people are Christian because of how they are raised, people are Muslim because of how they are raised, people are Wiccan because...

    etc.

Have you personally re-considered the beliefs you were raised with, or do you accept them because that is what you were taught growing up?
