  • Is it time for the US to greatly reduce military spending?

According to the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, the United States spent $420 billion dollars in military spending in 2005. In fact, 43% of all military spending in the world is done by the United States. In comparision, China ranked second in the world in military spending with $62.5 billion and Russia ranked third with $61.9 billion in military spending.

Today the United States has a large number of military bases in Japan, Germany and South Korea. These nations are the 2nd, 3rd and 13th largest economies in the world according to the World Bank. In fact, each country is among the largest military spenders in the world (Japan ranks 5th, Germany 7th and South Korea 10th).

Should the United States be curtailing our military? Imagine if the US cut their spending by only half, could that money be put to better use (tax relief, social programs, space exploration, etc.)?

  • Are the Democrats working toward FDR's Second Bill or Rights?

Excerpt from President Roosevelt's January 11, 1944 message to the Congress of the United States on the State of the Union

It is our duty now to begin to lay the plans and determine the strategy for the winning of a lasting peace and the establishment of an American standard of living higher than ever before known. We cannot be content, no matter how high that general standard of living may be, if some fraction of our people—whether it be one-third or one-fifth or one-tenth—is ill-fed, ill-clothed, ill-housed, and insecure.

This Republic had its beginning, and grew to its present strength, under the protection of certain inalienable political rights—among them the right of free speech, free press, free worship, trial by jury, freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures. They were our rights to life and liberty.

As our nation has grown in size and stature, however—as our industrial economy expanded—these political rights proved inadequate to assure us equality

  • Is time to for America to leave Europe, South Korea and Japan?

The American government is spending hundreds of billions of dollars to protect Europe, South Korea and Japan from the threat of a communist invasion (or in terms of Germany and Japan to keep these nations from rebuilding their military strength). Should we give these nations notice that we will no longer be spending our hard earned money on their protection while they become richer and richer? Is it time to close our bases in Okinawa, South Korea, Germany, Italy, Great Britain, and Turkey? Is the cost now outweighing the benefit?
