  • Advice for a Novice Barefoot Hiker?

I am a barefoot runner who went on my first barefoot hike yesterday. I consider my feet pretty tough, but a modest hiking trail's acorns and small rocks proved quite a challenge. On the back end of the 6-mile hike, my feet were sore and tired, which made me think I overdid it, and perhaps I did, but the pain of stepping on the rocks and acorns was problematic for me throughout. So, while I was proud of myself for finishing the hike, the experience left me wondering if doing it again is a good idea. I usually enjoy the feeling of the ground beneath my feet, but do any of the barefoot hikers out there have any advice for getting through the rough stuff?

  • Is there a point when non-conformity should be abandoned for the sake of etiquette? Where is that point?

Etiquette is said to be based on trivialities, norms of conduct that have evolved from custom and tradition. Many people defy these norms in their attire or conduct. These people may dress or behave in a way that is seen as vulgar or outlandish by conformist society. Indeed, it may cause other people in society to feel uncomfortable to see someone acting as these non-conformists do.

Of course, one could simply say that one should simply conform, and one could otherwise argue that people should do what they want without caring what other people think. However, is there a point when consideration for the feelings of others should dissuade the non-conformist?

(Note: I asked this question before and got a couple of responses. I was hoping to get a few more.)
