How to allow non-admin users to update Java while away from the company?
A company has a policy where the users don t have the admin credentials for it s Windows(7) laptops. However, Java updates are needed for certain functionality: if an outdated Java version is found, the application refuses (rightfully so) to start.
How should the company change the laptops so that Java updates are allowed at all times?
And maybe Flash, and Adobe Reader, and create network connections (for Wifi).
The user must be able to do so, while away (=not logged on to a company domain).

If I copy notes with pictures on an iPad4 to Word or send it to mail, pictures are gone. How to fix that?
Copy/paste the whole note results in only getting the text in the result.
I read something about synchronizing to Exchange, being the fault. Surely there must be a solution to this?
The student can now use Word instead of Notes, but still we have the problem of getting the existing note (with pics) to Word (or PDF).
Printing to a virtual Air PDF printer might do the trink, but I think that app costs $2. We don't want to pay :). The iPad was expensive enough.
1 個解答Software5 年前After connecting a new USB drive, the 'Safely eject' button doesn't work anymore. Nothing pops up. How come?
So, the button (system tray) is still visable, but right-clicking, left-clicking, or double-clicking: _nothing_ happens at all.
Looks like after connecting that new USB drive (TB), the whole options to safely remove a drive, stopped working entirely. (For _all_ drives.)
If I want to use "RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll" to eject the external USB drive, it says: 'The ... device is not removable and cannot be ejected or unplugged'. It is a lie that it is not a removable drive.
If I use USB_Disk_Ejector from quickandeasysoftware dot net, it says: 'The disk could not be ejected. Close any programs that might be using the disk and try again'.
If the drive is in use, it must be by Symantec Endpoint Protection (it created the file 'System Volume Information\EfaData\SYMEFA.DB' on it), but I don't want to buy an other virusscanner and Symantec says it is by design that it uses that file and that it can't be deleted otherwise than deleting whole Symantec.
BTW, right-clicking on the file and using Unlocker 1.9.1, it says 'No locking handle found.'. So, it should not be in use.
Also, in Explorer, there's no button 'eject' or 'remove savely...' when right-clicking the drive letter.
Any other options to savely eject the drive?

In other words: which Windows XP forum is (still) most active.
(Preferably a forum where they don't want to push you to a newer OS all the time. Yes, I know that XP has no security updates anymore.)
1 個解答Software6 年前Is there a Windows setting to skip files fast it can't copy (bad blocks) and automatically goes to the next one?
I'm trying to copy files from a damaged drive. (The drive has many bad blocks.)
When Windows can't read a file, you have to wait a long time before it ask to skip/cancel.
Probably because Windows tries many times to read the damaged block. Is there a registry (or other) setting - or maybe a program - which would tell Windows to try only 1 time to read the block or file, and (automatically) skip to the next file fast? If a program, then maybe log the files which it couldn't copy, so I could try them later.
Or is such behaviour (retry many times to read a damaged block) resident in the firmware of the drive?
1 個解答Software6 年前Is it possible to remote edit any file over port 80, as long as the client computer supports the extension?
Port 80, because that port is generally open in firewalls. (FTP is often closed; also, FTP is not as user friendly as an file explorer).
Remote edit, so you don't have to bring USB/memory sticks.
So I'm thinking of a website (preferable free) or little online (Java/)program which supports such.
The corporate computers can't be changed, so the system should probably need to be able to work in a browser.

On the first partition I have Windows7 64 bit. On the 2nd partition I have some data, but I can easily park that on another drive. So the main question is: can I shrink the 1st partition, without reinstalling Windows? (If software needed: then please: freeware :).)

Several extensions and websites tell me to click on Menu, and then on Extensions.
There _is_ no Extensions, when I click on menu. Is there an alternative way?
There is an item 'Widgets'. If I click 'Manage Widgets...', exactly nothing happens.
1 個解答Software7 年前What kind of 'mountain walk shoes' are definitely 100% water proof?
All the mountain walking shoes I saw, are made from leather (and plastics). But they will always leak after a while, if you walk through a small river or when it rains.
(Of course I could use gumboots, but you can't climb mountains with those - and they catch water, if you walk through a small river.)
The shoes should be able to hold crampons.
1 個解答Climbing7 年前Is it possible to search in _all_ files within Windows XP?
For example, it won't search in exe files for a string which I entered as the string to search for.
Windows seaches only in files like .txt, .bat, .doc, .rtf and more. But most files it will skip when searching. Is there a option or tool which can search a string in _all_ files on the harddisk? (With Windows XP.)
3 個解答Software7 年前My harddisk clicks. Is there a method to repair it?
I have two partitions. The first partition works. If I access the second partition, the harddisk gives audible ticks, and Windows tells me there is a cyclic redundancy error and sometimes offers me to reformat that partition. So it seems the drive spins up fine, but can't access the second partition because of a physical failure.
Because of the clicky sound the harddisk gives me, I know the harddisk is broken. Although I'm still able the access the first partition (with Windows on it). If I stop using a driveletter for my second partition, Windows runs fine. As soon as I link a driveletter again to the second partition, and access it, it's getting slow accessing it, which it can't, and the drive starts clicking again. It does several tries, then Windows and the harddisk give up and Windows come up with errors like above.
Questions:
1. If the error only occurs on (the end of) the big 2nd partition: what if I would chop that partition in two parts, and try to salvage files from the first part with a file repair tool. Could that work? Windows would probably want me to format the new partitions, but then ofcourse I'm sure all data will go lost (well, a quick format might not harm the files).
2. For a normal person, it is probably not possible to open the harddisk and put the magnetic discs in another disc closure (so I would have to open 2 drives, and close 1)? (I have no clean room, and no special tools.) Getting this done by a specialist drive repair company, is way to expensive...
I'm not comfortable to put in the fridge... I can try, but I don't expect it to get better (it might even get worse because of condens).

Say you have an user john logged on to a w2k3 server. Can you (anyone) poll the server to check if that user is already logged on?
To use that in a script to block a new logon, if the user is already logged on.
As Microsoft doesn't this support out of the box (there is an utility which can do it, but that costs money).
Something like:
if %logonname% in %listofloggedonusers% than logoff
or
if %logonname% in %listofloggedonusers% than deny logon
(These example won't work, because these commands don't exist. But you get the idea.)

(Workstation with Win7; most servers are W2K8; vsphere client V5; vmware vcenter server V5.)

It seems that virtual servers which are down, have a exclamation mark. However, some are up and still have an exclamation mark.

Hence, the user can logon on only one workstation at the same time?
Is there such a setting in AD?
(No TerminalServer environment. Win7 clients - but I think that's not important info.)

Say, I want to read the size of this picture:
https://www.google.com/images/srpr/logo4w.png
...and want that size added to a txt-file.
Can it be done in a batch file?
Like:
@echo off
getwidth (https://www.google.com/images/srpr/logo4w.png) >> c:\width.txt
getheigth (https://www.google.com/images/srpr/logo4w.png) >> c:\height.txt
Ofcourse, those getwidth and getheigth batch commands don't exist. But how do I get this done?
And if the picture URL doesn't exist, that it would write 0 to width.txt and height.txt.
